John E. Toerge, DO

John E. Toerge, DO, has been with MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital since 1983 and has more than 30 years of experience in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with extensive experience in spinal cord injury management, pain management, sports/musculoskeletal medicine and manual medicine He is currently developing the Musculoskeletal Institute for Clinical Treatment, Clinician Education and Research at the MedStar NRH Outpatient Physician Center in Bethesda. He is presently on faculty at the Georgetown University School of Medicine in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Toerge is also a member of the renowned MedStar Sports Medicine program.

Dr. Toerge has served in various capacities at MedStar NRH throughout his tenure, including leadership, administrative and clinical care positions. He was one of the founding clinicians at MedStar NRH and was instrumental in the development and initiation of our major clinical programs. He served as the sole clinical physician for the formative year of the institution.

Dr. Toerge served as Medical Director of the Rehabilitation Services Department and Associate Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He also served as Medical Director of the North Side Home Health Care Agency and as company physician for the Chicago City Ballet.

Dr. Toerge is a graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (now Mid-Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine), and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. 

Dr. Toerge is a diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, an active member of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. He has also served on editorial boards, written articles and book chapters, and presented many lectures on a variety of topics in rehabilitation medicine.
