NBC 4 interviewed Dr. Michael Yochelson, M.D., Medical Director of the National
Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) Brain Injury Program, about the serious issues
surrounding concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI). A patient who
suffered a head injury during a lacrosse game visited Dr. Yochelson at the NRH
concussion clinic to learn more about the long-term repercussions the injury
may have caused.
According to Dr. Yochelson, concussions or mild TBIs are commonly seen among
young athletes who do not seek help when they get injured on the field. Many
of Dr. Yochelson’s patients only come to see him once they have suffered
a more severe head injury. A second concussion may cause more serious complications
for the patient.
As a result of the increased awareness surrounding concussions
and other head injuries, anyone who suffers from a head injury should take
the necessary precautions to avoid long-term damage.
