Pain Management Fellowship

The Pain Management Fellowship in the Georgetown University Hospital/National Rehabilitation Hospital (GTUH/NRH) PM&R Residency Training Program is a twelve (12) month ACGME accredited experience based at the Washington Hospital Center (WHC) in the District of Columbia (D.C.). Throughout the twelve months of training, the fellow receives a longitudinal experience in the evaluation of both new and follow-up hospital-based inpatients and ambulatory community-based outpatients who are experiencing acute , chronic, and cancer related pain. Invasive procedures (over 3,500 per year) are performed both at WHC and in a nearby surgical center.

The Fellowship Program also provides specialty rotations in the areas of headache management, musculoskeletal pain (including rehabilitative/restorative therapies), and psychosocial pain management techniques (including experience in self-regulation training methods). Furthermore, the fellow participates in a hospice experience in order to learn to focus on pain management techniques that are applicable to the home setting where caregivers are relatively untrained and inexperienced.

The fellow is afforded the didactic opportunities of the GTUH/NRH PM&R Residency Training Program as well as those offered by the Departments of Hematology/Oncology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Anesthesiology at the Washington Hospital Center. Specific pain management related journal clubs and lectures are conducted for the fellow, who is also expected to be an active participant in the Residency Training Program=s educational curriculum.

The applicant must also be eligible for D.C. medical licensure.

CERTIFICATE: Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the fellow will receive a certificate attesting to the special training in the area of his/her additional experience.
