PM&R Medical Student Program

Doctor with Medical Student

The National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) offers an elective rotation for eligible fourth year medical students from medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) as well as schools with an accreditation status otherwise acceptable to the NRH.

There are two clerkships offered which consist of an initial clerkship with four-weeks of weekly rotations which are designed to include experience with inpatient spinal cord, traumatic brain injury, stroke, cardiac and musculoskeletal rehabilitation care, as well as one week of exposure to outpatient services including cancer rehabilitation, prosthetics and orthotics. The medical students work under the direct supervision of the residents and attending staff.   Upon successful completion of the initial clerkship, the medical student may choose one of the weekly rotations for the entire month.  During this rotation the student will follow 2-3 patients on their own with the supervision of the faculty attending.

Additional hands-on experience will be provided to the student as he/she participates in patient therapy sessions. Didactic conferences including a core PM&R lecture series, musculoskeletal conference series, electrodiagnostic medicine series, journal club, morbidity and mortality conference, physical diagnosis conference, and grand rounds are also available to the student.
