PM&R Medical Student Program
The National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) offers an elective rotation for eligible fourth year medical students from medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) as well as schools with an accreditation status otherwise acceptable to the NRH. This rotation, which is four weeks in length, is designed to include experience on inpatient, consultation, and outpatient services. Medical students work under the direct supervision of the residents and attending staff. Additional hands-on experience will be provided to the student as he/she participates in patient therapy sessions. Didactic conferences including a core PM&R lecture series, musculoskeletal conference series, electrodiagnostic medicine series, journal club, morbidity and mortality conference, physical diagnosis conference, and grand rounds are also available to the student.
The National Rehabilitation Hospital specializes in treating persons with physical disabilities caused by spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, stroke, arthritis, amputation, multiple sclerosis, post-polio syndrome, and other neurological and orthopedic conditions. It has grown from a single hospital to the NRH Medical Rehabilitation Network. providing inpatient and outpatient care and day treatment programs. The network provides nearly 200,000 ambulatory visits annually in addition to the hospital’s more than 1,700 inpatient admissions. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks NRH among "America’s Best Hospitals."
All students interested in this elective are required to submit the following:
- Demographic Information Form (MS Word) (Adobe PDF)
- Your school’s affiliation agreement completed and signed by the appropriate personnel
- Proof of having passed a physical examination within the previous year and a tuberculosis skin test within the previous twelve (12) months. The evidence shall indicate that at the time of the physical examination, the student was free from contagious diseases as nearly as could be ascertained by such examination, and is otherwise physically able to participate in all aspects of the clinical experience at NRH.

- Proof of professional liability insurance coverage during the rotation
- Medical School Transcript
- Current USMLE/COMLEX Scores
- Your medical school’s evaluation form for this rotation
Applications must be submitted at least eight (8) weeks prior to the elective date. Applications which do not contain the required items listed above will be returned as incomplete.
For rotating medical students, a co-ed apartment near the hospital is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. To inquire about the availability of this housing, please call 202-877-7227. Please be advised that housing books up quickly. We strongly recommend that once your rotation dates are confirmed, you make appropriate arrangements.
A student picture I.D. and white jacket is required in all clinical settings. A temporary picture I.D. will be issued to you on the first day of your rotation. If needed, parking vouchers will also be issued on the first day of your rotation.
