Individuals with impairments ranging from mild reduction in visual acuity to profound vision impairment often can often benefit from medical rehabilitation services. These vision impairments may result from congenital or acquired conditions, including:
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
- Traumatic brain injury
- Stroke
MedStar National Rehabilitation Network's vision rehabilitation services include a comprehensive evaluation followed by development of an individualized treatment plan. The treatment plan is designed to meet the patient’s functional goals and to address areas most affected by vision loss, including self-care, work, and leisure activities.
Although MedStar NRH experts are unable to change the underlying cause of the vision impairment, they strive to improve patients’ quality of life by teaching them to make the most of their residual vision.
The Vision Rehabilitation Program is staffed by occupational therapists who have expertise and specialized training in vision rehabilitation. Other services, such as Physical Therapy, may also be recommended.
