Scoliosis
|
|
Scoliosis is a lateral (away from the middle) or sideways curvature of the spine. This condition may be:
- Congenital—usually related to a problem with the formation of vertebrae or fused ribs during prenatal development
- Neuromuscular—poor muscle control, or muscular weakness or paralysis caused by cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, polio, or another disease
- Of unknown cause—scoliosis appearing in a previously straight spine
Symptoms of scoliosis include:
- The spine curving abnormally to the side (laterally)
- The shoulders and/or hips appearing uneven
- Backache or low back pain
- Fatigue
- The course of treatment is determined by the cause of the scoliosis, the size and location of the curve, and the stage of bone growth.
MedStar National Rehabilitation Network offers a range of services to treat adolescents and adults with scoliosis. These services include:
- Medical evaluation and care
- Physical therapy
- Brace recommendations and provision of an appropriate brace
- Linkages to support groups and other community resources
