Project Abstract/Overview

The purpose of the Mobile Audio-Visual Intervention System (MAVIS) project was to design a clinical tool to record and play back video and audio information in a simple, convenient, and intuitive way. This information can be edited to highlight certain aspects and can be saved for future use. The tool will be used in any environment (e.g. patient rooms and bathrooms, treatment areas, cars, homes, outdoors) by clinicians with patients, family members, and other clinicians. It will be used for education and training purposes such as patient treatment, family training, and clinical in-service education. While several commercial systems are available, MAVIS has several design features that make it unique, and as a custom-developed project is available to be integrated into other ATRC projects.

Progress and Outcomes

Main accomplishments:

•  evaluated and purchased a new camera with increased video quality

•  modified User Interface to be more intuitive

•  introduced into clinical service (mainly nursing)

During 2004, project investigators completed a beta version of the system. As planned, this prototype was then given to therapists for use. In addition, the use of the system was expanded to be used clinically by the nursing staff for education and patient handling safety issues. For the final system the project purchased a new laptop computer with the WideScreen aspect ratio to allow for a larger viewing area when replaying videos. Small changes in the Display screens will be implemented, and the system will be left with clinicians to use as they see appropriate.
